Umberto Boccioni
An Italian and main member of the futurist group known for its glorification of the dynamism of modern technology and promotion of the representation of its symbols of violence, power, and speed.  There was a desire in futurism to destroy the past and create a tabula rasa.  Indeed, it was a very violent, destructive movement.

The City Rises (1910*)

There is a definite anachronistic quality to The City Rises. Boccioni is describing the ideas of modernity and mechanization through the depiction of a horse.  Everything in the painting seems to be swirling through a vortex; there is a lot of energy present in the painting. Boccioni utilized the neo-impressionist technique of Seurat.
